Chris Marshall was born in Wellington, New Zealand. After completing degrees in anthropology and theology, he spent four years at King’s College, University of London, where he completed a Ph.D. in New Testament in 1986 under the supervison of Professor G. N. Stanton.

During his time in England, he was involved in the leadership team of the London Mennonite Fellowship and since returning to New Zealand has retained close links with Mennonites in Britain, America, and Australia, including spending two periods of sabbatical leave at Mennonite seminaries. He lectures in New Testament at the Tyndale Graduate School of Theology in Auckland and has been widely used as a conference speaker in New Zealand, Australia, North America, South Africa and Southeast Asia.

In addition to articles on biblical and ethical themes, Marshall is author of Faith as a Theme in Mark’s Gospel (Cambridge University Press, 1989), Kingdom Come: The Kingdom of God in the Teaching of Jesus (Impetus Publications, 1993), and Beyond Retribution: A New Testament Vision for Justice, Crime and Punishment (Eerdmans, 2001).

Chris Marshall is married to Margaret, a qualified lawyer who works as an adjudicator in the Disputes Tribunal, and has two sons, Peter (1985) and Andrew (1989). He lives in Auckland.
